Some Blog Updates

Hey readers! This is just a quick update to let you guys know about some improvements I’ve been making to the blog. You may have noticed some recent additions to the front page – namely a few social media links (plus one to my author’s page on Amazon), a handy search bar, and a list of links to all of the blog’s categories and tags.

Perhaps most noticeable, though, are the new banner and blog icon. I changed the banner from the old hydra image to this shiny new elephant/dragon faceoff because the old banner… well, it didn’t look good on mobile. At all. With the way WordPress crops banners for smaller viewing platforms, I needed to find one that still looked all right when narrowed down. I also needed to size and center the text just right so it wouldn’t get cut of on mobile.

Besides, the elephant/dragon faceoff is kind of amazing. And it honestly feels perfect for this blog!

Alas, it seems my time in the spotlight has passed

As for the icon, I decided that something out of a Medieval bestiary fit the theme better, especially since that’s what I based the blog’s color scheme off of in the first place. It, ah, also looks better than all the goofy footprint things I made before. So, a weirdly human-faced owl friend joins the party!

Expanding our horizons

That being said, I’ll also be expanding on our theme a little bit. From its start, The Biology of Mythology was meant to have more than just advice for writers. I always had a few ideas for related topics, such as “book reviews” that look at how popular fantasy books approach their creatures from a scientific perspective and how well those approaches work.

Recently, I’ve decided to lean into this broader idea of zoology/fantasy relationships so that more people can get something out of this blog. The next article will be about Medieval bestiaries and why they even feature mythical creatures, as this topic only seemed appropriate with the site’s visual theming.

Rest assured though, writers! More content for you is still coming. It’ll just be part of a greater variety of articles.

Thoughts?

As always, feel free to leave a comment about what you think! (I also fixed the comment box on posts so it won’t disappear after a while anymore.) Do you have a science topic you’d like me to cover? A particular mythical monster you want a deep dive on? A beloved fantasy novel that’s just begging for a review from a science nerd? Let me know down below!
